Jill Freedman (American, 1939-2019)
Self-taught, Jill Freedman is best known for her immersive street and documentary photography. For her series Circus Days (1971-1975), she followed the Clyde Beatty-Cole Brothers Circus for two months during a time when circus life was nearly obsolete. She documented the daily life of circus workers, performers, and animals as the travelled and performed across the East Coast and Midwest. The images ranged from playful and humorous to moody and mysterious. Circus Days was published as a book in 1975.
Including Circus Days, Jill Freedman published seven books during her lifetime. Her work has been exhibited internationally and is in the permanent collections of Museum of Modern Art, New York; Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington D.C.; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris; and many others.
