Kris Graves (American, b. 1982)
To amend the scarcity of non-extreme portrayals of Black Americans, Kris Graves makes glowing portraits doused in technicolor lighting for his series The Testament Project (2016-ongoing). Graves gives control of the color and light to his models and often shows the portraits alongside written testimonies about individual experiences of self and the world in relation to race as he seeks to portray individuality and deconstruct perceptions of Blackness as a monolith. The Testament Project continues as an ongoing exploration and re-conception of the contemporary Black experience in America.
Kris Graves is an Amplifier Fellow at Democracy in Focus. He has completed artist residencies at Aurora Photo Center, Indianapolis (2022); Center for Photography, New York (2020); and Light Work, New York (2019). His work has been exhibited internationally and is in the permanent collections of Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; Getty Institute, Los Angeles; Brooklyn Museum, New York; National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.; and various others.
