Janna Ireland (American, b.1985)
Janna Ireland’s images and installations evoke classical works art to examine family, home, architecture, and nature as they relate to Black identity in American culture. She and her children are often primary figures in her work, depicting their gentle interactions with nature and the remnants of daily routines. In this sense, the titular baby bird in Fledgling (2024) is a reminder of the delicate cycle of life and how to approach it with curiosity and grace.
Janna Ireland received her BFA from New York University (2007) and her MFA from University of California, Los Angeles (2013). She has been an assistant professor at Occidental College in Los Angeles since 2022. Janna Ireland: True Story Index (2024)— curated by Santa Barbara Museum of Art and Museum of Contemporary Art Santa Barbara— is her most major career survey to date. This exhibition included images from various bodies of work, including her series-turned-monograph on legendary Black architect Paul R. Williams. Ireland was the 2024 runner-up for The Aperture Foundation Portfolio Prize. Her work is in the permanent collections of Los Angeles Contemporary Museum of Art; California African American Museum; Nevada Museum of Art; and others.
