Matthew Finley (American, b. 1972)
For his project An Impossibly Normal Life (2020-2024), Matthew Finely constructs a new narrative through found imagery and creative writing. He began the series after offhandedly learning that his late uncle, Uncle Ken, might have been gay and therefore could have potentially experienced the same struggles as he did. Taking vintage images and embellishing them with rhinestones and glitter as a celebratory nod to queer cultural histories of drag, disco, and camp, Finley creates an alternate history that imagines a world where his Uncle Ken could have lived free and uninhibited.
Matthew Finley’s work has been featured in exhibitions at Foley Gallery, New York, Houston Center for Photography; Los Angeles Center for Photography; and others. His images can be found in the permanent collections of Museum of Modern Art and History, Lancaster CA and Center for Fine Art Photography, Fort Collins, CO. An Impossibly Normal Life was awarded CENTER Santa Fe’s Personal Award as well as the Center for Photographic Art’s LGBTQ+ Artist Grant in 2024.
