Maggie Meiners (American, b. 1972)
For her series Conscious States (2017), Maggie Meiners visualizes her mind during her practice of Transcendental Meditation. This meditation technique is harnessed for detaching oneself from anxiety and promoting harmony and self-realization by quieting the mind and repeating a mantra. Here, Meiners illustrates her experiences of moving from a waking state into the fourth level of consciousness, which is often considered to be a dreamlike, yet alert state. The references to landscapes and nature within the images portray the physicality of place and refuge while the colorful circles represent the mind’s flow between states of consciousness.
Maggie Meiners is an interdisciplinary artist whose work revolves around identity, consumerism, media, popular culture, and psychology. She received her MFA in Media Studies from Maine Media College (2021). Meiners’s work has been published and exhibited widely and is in the permanent collections of Illinois Institute of Art; Wheaton College, Illinois; Montclair Art Museum, New Jersey; and others.
