    Tabitha Soren (American, b. 1967)

Tabitha Soren works within the tension between beauty and damage, allowing for order and chaos, precision and aimlessness, and matter and void collide. Hovering between illusion and object, Tabitha Soren’s Relief series (2018-ongoing) links photographic processes to ancient traditions of mark-making. She references the first stone reliefs made by the Sumerians as she engages with cutting, bending, carving, blasting, shooting, burning, and painting on her formal landscape photographs. In making them, Soren works to extend photography past notions of representation in favor of a more complex visual world.

After a career as a reporter, Tabitha Soren studied art and photography at Stanford University. Her work has been published in The New York Times, Vanity Fair, McSweeney’s, and various other magazines and journals. Soren’s work has been widely exhibited and is in the permanent collections of Getty Museum, Los Angeles; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; Pier 24, San Francisco; High Museum of Art, Atlanta; and many more. She is the author of the books Surface Tension (RVB Books, Paris, 2021) and Fantasy Life (Aperture, 2017).
