Jonathan Castillo (American, b. 1982)
Through portraiture and depictions of interior spaces, Jonathan Castillo’s project Immigrant Owned (2017-2023) documents local immigrant-owned businesses as embodiments of the American dream. He is interested in rendering an essential yet often overlooked and misunderstood part of the American economy, celebrating these businesses and
entrepreneurs as fundamental to their communities. As part of the city of Chicago’s major public art project, Immigrant Owned was installed in 2024 at O’Hare International Airport’s Terminal 5, where it will remain indefinitely.
Jonathan Castillo received a BFA from California State University at Long Beach (2013) and an MFA from Columbia College Chicago (2019). He was the 2019-21 recipient of the Diane Dammeyer Fellowship in Photographic Arts and Social Issues. His work has been featured in exhibitions at Art Institute of Chicago; Chicago Cultural Center; Photo LA; Center for Creative Photography, Arizona; and many others. Castillo is an adjunct professor at Columbia College Chicago.
