    Jay Wolke (American, b. 1954)

For his series Big Boat Little Pond (2013-2022), Jay Wolke is concerned with the disparities between infrastructure and the surrounding communities. These photographs explore the intersections of architecture, nature, and habitation to analyze the built environment as an example of the potential consequences of ambitious industrialization. Girl on Phone, Beach Shelter, Trieste, Italy (2016) shows people lounging by the ocean on concrete structure. In this case, the convergence of nature and infrastructure is both an adaptation and a limitation.

Jay Wolke has taught photography and art at various universities and is currently a Professor of Photography at Columbia College Chicago where he was Chair of Art and Design from 2000-2005 and 2008-2014. His work has been exhibited internationally and is in the permanent collections of Museum of Modern Art, New York; Art Institute of Chicago; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; and San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Wolke has published four monographs—most recently, Same Dream, Another Time in 2017.
