Jess T. Dugan (American, b. 1986)
Jess T. Dugan explores identity and representation through photography, video, and writing. Drawing from their experience as a queer, non-binary person, Dugan creates intimate portraits and still lifes that are odes to vulnerability, empathy, authenticity, and the transformative power of storytelling. Their practice does not aim to provide definitive answers to the complexities of personhood, community, and contemporary social life; rather, it invites viewers to engage with others in an unguarded, meaningful way.
Jess T. Dugan received their MFA from Columbia College Chicago (2014) and MA in Museum Studies from Harvard University (2010). Their work has been featured in exhibitions at Smithsonian Natural Portrait Gallery, Washington, D.C.; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Aperture Foundation, New York; and many others. Winner of the ICP Infinity Award (2019) and a Champion of Change Award from the White House (2015), Dugan’s photographs are in the permanent collection of over 60 museums and cultural institutions.
