Silvia Malagrino (American b. 1950, Buenos Aires, Argentina)
Silvia Malagrino’s practice is fluid and interdisciplinary. She works with different mediums—photography, video, text, and sound—to interrogate history, explore culture, and test the boundaries of personal imagination. At the intersections of fact, fiction, memory, and subjectivity, Malagrino’s practice is continuously interested in the individual interior world as a product of one’s social context. In this early black-and-white photographic work, Malagrino used hair in near abstraction to explore dreams, the body, and the psyche.
Silvia Malagrino taught photography at Columbia College Chicago from 1982 to 1985 and has taught at University of Illinois at Chicago since 1990. She received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2010 and grants from the National Endowment of the Arts in 2004, 1994, and 1993. Her work has been exhibited internationally and is in the permanent collections of National Library of France; Art Institute of Chicago; Center for Latin American Studies at University of Pittsburgh; and many others. Malagrino lives and works in Chicago.
