Bas Princen’s photos depict elements of architecture—often abandoned landscapes or newly constructed cities—not to illustrate their reality, but to reveal the ambiguity that occurs when the natural and artificial adopt similar forms and when it is unclear whether things are being created or destroyed. By carefully considering the descriptive information he includes within the frame, such as architectural details, light, and color, Princen endows the places he depicts with a strange, otherworldly atmosphere that hints at a fourth dimension—architecture’s mythical status.
Bas Princen was born in 1975 in Zeeland, The Netherlands. He graduated from the Design Academy of Eindhoven in 1998 and joined the Berlage Institute in 1999. His work has been exhibited at AUT, Innsbruck; The Hauge; Museum Boijmans van Beuningen; and NAi, Rotterdam.
