American, b. 1983 Beneath the Surface of the Vaughan Lewis Glacier, Alaska, 2016Pigment Print9 x 12” Image on 11 x 14” Paper Edition of 30
Lucas Foglia’s project Human Nature (2006-17) reflects the artist’s interest in the impact of humans on the natural world and the ways we have altered the seemingly unalterable. Examining a broad range of themes, from the scientific realities of climate change to poetic longing for the outdoors, the images are nuanced explorations of the forces—internal and external—that both pit us against and bring us closer to nature. This image depicts the Juneau Icefield Research Program in Alaska, which employs scientists and students in a long-term study of the Vaughan Lewis Glacier. The program has determined that at the current rate of climatic warming, this glacier will not exist by the year 2200.
Foglia’s work is in the permanent collections of the Denver Art Museum; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; the Philadelphia Museum of Art; the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London; among others. He received his MFA in photography from Yale University in 2010. The Museum of Contemporary Photography will present the exhibition Lucas Foglia: Human Nature from July 19 to September 30, 2018.
Purchase of this Fine Print is accompanied by Foglia's Human Nature publication.
