By substituting the iconic Hollywood sign with the word YouTube, Eric Fleischauer (American, b. 1977) humorously declares that the video-sharing platform has eclipsed the film and television industry. In so doing, the artist suggests that the old media of the 20th century created by a small group of specialists for mass audiences is being replaced by a new democratic, participatory media where user-generated and professional content exists side by side.

Fleischauer is a Chicago-based artist and filmmaker who holds an MFA from the School of Art and Design, University of Illinois at Chicago, and a BS in Communication from State University of New York College at Fredonia. His work is included with the Midwest Photographers Project at the MoCP and has been shown in Chicago at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Gallery 400, Co-Prosperity Sphere, threewalls, DOCUMENT, and in Germany at the Kunstmuseum Bonn. Fleischauer also currently teaches in the department of Film, Video, New Media, and Animation at The School of the Art Institute Chicago.
