For her Domestic Demise series, Patty Carroll creates and photographs colorfully constructed installations wherein a woman’s domestic hobby or activity overwhelms her— literally to death. This humorous series features heavily stylized scenes, loosely inspired by several sources including the game of Clue, where murder occurs in one of five rooms of the house: the Dining Room, the Kitchen, the Hall, the Conservatory, and the Library. The mannequin in this tightly composed image meets her end while scrapbooking, thus wryly commenting on the ways in which certain activities are culturally gendered and female identities are carefully constructed, much like the image itself.

Patty Carroll completed a BFA in Graphic Design from the University of Illinois, Champaign - Urbana (1968) and an MS from the Institute of Design, Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago (1972). Her work has been exhibited both nationally and internationally. Solo shows include: the Art Institute of Chicago (2004); the White Box Museum, Beijing (2010); and the Chicago Cultural Center (2012) among others. Her work is held in numerous collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Smithsonian Institution and Library of Congress, Washington D.C.; the Art Institute of Chicago; Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; and the Bibliothèque nationale de France, Paris; among others. She currently teaches digital photography at Columbia College Chicago and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
