John McWilliams taught photography at Cooper Union in New York before moving to Georgia State University, Atlanta, where he taught and served as the director of the School of Art and Design. Concerned with the history of land use in the South, his work is noted for its vivid approach to designated wilderness areas and to sites that bear traces of former inhabitants. McWilliams is particularly interested in areas that are in jeopardy of being irrevocably modified, or those in flux. McWilliams's work has been published in numerous articles, books, and monographs, including Land of Deepest Shade, Picturing the south: 1860 to the Present, Aperture, Places with a Past: Site-Specific Biographies. He has exhibited internationally at institutions such as Palazzo Venezia, Rome; The International Center of Photography, New York; and The National Museum of American Art at the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC.
