(Venezuela, b. 1941)
For more than twenty years, Helena Chapellin Wilson has created a body of Surrealist images with figure, object, and space relationships that arrest moments from the rhythm of reality, where even a housecat's yawn takes on different proportions. Utilizing a variety of photographic processes from nineteenth-century gum bichromate to digital applications, her works of architecture and the landscape, flora and fauna, are exquisitely layered compositions based on nature, dreams, and the passage or time. Wilson has resided in the United States since 1971. She completed her university training in architecture in Caracas, Venezuela, and in art history at the Universities of Florence and Perugia in Italy. In 1976 she received her Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in photography from Columbia College Chicago.
