    Sasha Phyars-Burgess (American, b. 1988)

As an ongoing exploration of identity, place, family, home, and heritage, much of Sasha Phyars-Burgess’ practice is a photographic meditation on the Black diaspora through intimate black-and-white portraits, still lifes, and street photographs. They are interested in connecting shared black histories around the world by providing, the tender, nuanced representations of Black life and Black imagery that are rarely foregrounded in contemporary media. Omar at Readi Workshop, Austin, Chicago (2019) is from their monograph Untitled (2021) which spans three bodies of work that explore her heritage and its complicated history across Trinidad, Canada, England, and the United States. It won Aperture’s First PhotoBook of the Year award in 2021.

Sasha Phyars-Burgess completed a BA in photography at Bard College and an MFA at Cornell University. Her work has been exhibited at Roman Susan Gallery, Chicago; the Silver Eye Center for Photography, Pittsburg; Fotografiska, New York; and Philadelphia Photo Arts Center, Philadelphia, PA; among others. They were the recipient of the Diane Dammeyer Fellowship in Photographic Arts and Social Issues in 2021 and was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2023.
