Hillary Johnson (American)
Hillary Johnson’s multidisciplinary practice explores the alignment of personhood, community, and the environment. Her photographs, videos, handmade books, and immersive installations are rooted in slow, mindful observation of nature and landscape. Self Portrait as a Small Tree (Ascendance) (2023) unifies self and nature as reflections of one another. In capturing the temporality of nature, Johnson’s practice searches for connections between humans, society, and the land with a delicate empathy for social and cultural change.
Hillary Johnson is a recipient of the Albert P. Weisman Award (2023) and has had work exhibited by the Spanish Embassy, New York; Hüten Gallery, Shanghai; and Lobby Organization, Washington, D.C.; to name a few. Johnson’s work is in the permanent collections of Museum of Science and Industry, Chicago and the Polaroid Corporation, Chicago. She holds an MFA in Photography from Columbia College Chicago (2024) where she currently teaches.
