Beate Gütschow: LS/S is the first monograph on this exceptional artist, features two bodies of work that compel the viewer to think about humankind's celebration of nature and our ceaseless desire to control it. The LS series includes panoramic color landscapes made up of digital assemblages of details from the artist's archive of images of trees, fields, knolls, clouds, people, and shadows. In Gütschow’s most recent series, S, color landscapes have given way to a grayscale series of urban settings. Mixing barren landscapes and architectural elements taken from buildings, she constructs urban wastelands, rife with post-apocalyptic tension. Beate Gütschow’s exploration as an artist directly probes questions of pictorial representations of reality. Images from Gütschow’s LS series were on view at the Museum of Contemporary Photography in 2007. The publication features an interview by Natasha Egan, Executive Director of the Museum of Contemporary Photography, Lesley Martin, and Akiko Ono.
