Intrigued by the sheer volume and ubiquity of images in contemporary culture, Penelope Umbrico’s (American, b. 1957) past work has included pulling images off of Flickr based on keyword searches for universal subjects such as sunsets. She then installs them as large grids, the cumulative effect of which underscores recurring themes in photography as well as commonalities across humanity. In Moving Mountains, Umbrico builds on this concept by working with images of mountains taken by accomplished artists whose work is documented in the Masters of Photography books published by Aperture. She re-photographs these mountain images with smart phone and downloadable filter apps, setting up a relationship with each historical photographer and updating their work.

Penelope Umbrico lives and works in New York City. She received her MFA from the School of Visual Arts, New York, where she now teaches in the department of Photography, Video and Related Media. Her work has been exhibited at the MoCP, Montgomery Museum of Fine Art, and the International Center of Photography, New York, among many others.
