In his most recent body of work, Jay Turner Frey Seawell (American, b. 1986) investigates the commemorative landscape of the United States. Seawell photographs monuments and memorials around the country, from the grounds of the National Mall to the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Hawaii, one of the country’s most hallowed cemetery memorials. The scene and its
looming graveyard shadows contrast government symbols of honor and peace with chaos and disturbance, as an overturned flowerpot left by a visitor rests against a wall of names.

Seawell recently completed an MFA from Columbia College Chicago and currently lives and works in Washington D.C. He was the recipient of the Albert P. Weisman Award, the John Mulvany Scholarship, and most recently a nominee of The Baum Award for An Emerging American Photographer. Over the past couple years his work has been included in exhibitions in Chicago at The Arcade, Lillstreet Art Center, and Riverside Arts Center; the Pingyao International Photography Festival in China; and the Invisible Dog Art Center in Brooklyn, New York.
